College Program Information

Jonathan offers three different programs that are appropriate for any time.

Spirituals to Hip-Hop.

A musical journey celebrating African American Music from its inception.
The Negro Spiritual serves as the inspiration and the spring board for exploring other genres like Gospel, Jazz, R&B, Blues, Funk and Hip-Hop.

Music that fueled the Civil Rights Movement.

From Billie Holiday to Mahalia Jackson and Aretha Franklin, from Curtis Mayfield and Sly Stone to Gil Scott-Heron, Marvin Gaye, the iconic music was an essential component of the movement, capturing the vitality and idealism necessary to fuel dangerous marches, sit-ins, picket lines and freedom rides.

Block party!

A mixture of African American music – r&b, neo-soul, and funk (perfect for outdoor or court yard setting)

All presentations may be concert or concert/lecture format.

What Student Leaders are Saying:

The students, staff, and faculty of Northeast State Community College were indeed fortunate to have Jonathan Blanchard’s “The Promise” here for a truly inspirational and enlightening musical program that traced the history of the American Spiritual from slavery to hip-hop.  Everything about this program—the music, the information-sharing, and the audience participation—was perfectly suited to our school and its educational mission.
